The farming colonies on Oskurn, a new member of the UFoP, are being attacked by a terrifying creature and the Eclipse and the Freedom have been dispatched to help.
Qirs (both singular and plural) are creatures that live in hives much like termites in the abandoned mines on Oskurn
( a UfoP planet that once mined Quenite. When the mines ran out of the mineral the miners left and the colonists turned to farming). They can be anywhere from 6 to 10 feet tall. They are primarily bipeds but have multiple appendages that are tentacle in appearance but act as arms that divide into several smaller, short ones at the ends with the ability to grasp like hands.
They are covered in a layer of scales and slime that works like armor plating so piercing is nearly impossible and the slime....much like their saliva...is so acidic that touch is also impossible. The acidic nature of their armor and saliva is much like that of sulfuric acid and can melt through steel. One drop of their saliva would be able to melt through the hull plating of a ship in a matter of minutes.
The queen breeds with her drones once every 20 years. Once she breeds she can lay up to 30 eggs which hatch in 2 months. Each larvae will have a nurse which is a Qirs female and she is in charge of caring for and feeding her charge while young Qirs work to build their hive to make room for the larvae once they mature out of their larvae stage. This means that the nurses must leave the protection of the hive and seek out prey to feed off of and bring back to the larvae. They have a tubule that comes out of their mouth and they insert it into the throats of their prey and dissolve their prey's internal organs then suck it into themselves and take it back to their young. The Qirs will feed off of any sentient being...reptile, mammal, fish, bird, small large....if it has internal organs it is prey. The larvae mature and become young Qirs within 6 months then the hive focuses on their structure and uses what food reserves they have built up. When those reserves are depleted they hibernate until the next breeding cycle.
It will be our job to either find a way to stop the attacks and protect the colonists. Besides the challenges and dangers of dealing with the Qirs there is the issue of....are these sentient beings and would irradiating them violate the Prime Directive?
