FYI: This log takes place *before* the beam down to Romulus but after the final briefing.
Commander Patton sat in an comfortable chair in his quarters, looking over various reports one last time regarding the meeting that would soon occur on Romulus.
Patton sat back in his chair and closed his eyes. His breathing slowed...dreams took hold of him...and sent him on an journey.
Ensign Robert Patton, 3rd Engineering Officer of the USS Chaffee was in good spirits. Sure, he had his shift in Engineering coming up, but he was looking ahead to some 'personal time' with a certain young lady. Patton smiled and once more looked at the little box in his right hand. Inside was an surprise for this lady, and one that Bob felt with certainty would bring forth the word or words he was hoping for.
Bob thought back to the first time in Engineering; she was beautiful, with dark hair and hazel eyes and a smile that could melt..well, just about anything....
He was surprised that when he had talked to her, she actually responded..and *then* replied 'yes,' to an offer of a drink later.
The days had gone by in a whirl, and they had continued to see each other, till one day Bob had said he had an important question for her, and she had smiled and replied "..Ok." They planed to meet in the ship's lounge later that evening.
Bob placed the box back in his pocket and kept moving towards Engineering...suddenly.." Alert!....Alert!!!....phosphoric cloud in Engineering....!!! " Bob's blood went cold. Something had gone wrong in Engineering and the crew there were in danger. Bob hurried down there to find the Docs and emergency crew attempting to gain access into Engineering. Suddenly, there was in explosion from inside Engineering, and the intercom shouting " Placing 'containment field' around Engineering area..we have an breech!" Patton stood aside to let the folks assigned to the emergency do their work. It was some hours before the 'all clear' was given and Bob and the others could enter Engineering. The Engineering crew had worked to hold the breech, but to no avail. The explosion had taken half of them out of the picture, the rest had tried to fix the problem before passing out due to the phosphorous gas. Bob found Mary on an gurney with the others, and looked down at her covered body. He slowly opened the box and looked at the ring, then shut it once and for all.
Commander Patton awoke with a start, sweating. Shaking his head, he put away the books he'd been reading, then cleared some tears from his eyes.
