Time For a Change

During the last shore leave Nikki had visited the JAG office on the base to discuss taking the final step in closing the door on her past....specifically....dropping her married name and returning to her maiden name. Since receiving the divorce from her ex over a year ago she had been struggling on the top of the fence about the name. On negative side...going back to her maiden name meant filing for the legal name change and going through the red tape of changing it back with Starfleet. That, in itself, was daunting. Also on the negative side...not many of her coworkers knew her marital history and the name change would be like turning on a neon sign that said "I failed in my marriage"...even though it wasn't her failure...or his for that matter...she just couldn't handle being married to a Section 31 officer who would be gone for undetermined lengths of time.
On the plus side....the marriage had only been for 3 years so she still felt more like a Beckett than a Redex. Also on the plus side....it was time to move on. She had attempted it once with the CO of the Eclipse's Marines but that hadn't gone too well as he got transferred after just one date and he left with no goodbye. It had caused Nikki to take a couple steps backward in her attempt to move forward. That was a year ago. Now she was in a stronger place and ready to shed the past.
Two months after JAG had started the process Nikki finally got a message from them that they had been successful and that all of her Starfleet records would now show her rightful name, Nicole Beckett.
Nikki looked at the monitor on her desk in her office and smiled. It was official. She leaned back in her chair and looked up at the ceiling as she tried to identify, organize and compartmentalize her mixed emotions.
